Areas of Dentistry

Puppy     Veterinary Dentistry begins with the evaluation of the abnormalities, disease, trauma or neoplastic problems in the oral cavity. Frequently, an anesthetic is necessary to closely examine the mouth and throat areas.

Pedodontics involves problems, of the developing oral cavity. Staged extractions, surgical repositioning of teeth and orthodontics can avoid many occlusal problems and the early loss of teeth.

Periodontics involves the tissues that support the teeth. Estimates of up to 80% of our pets have some degree of periodontal disease by the time they are three years old. Effective therapy also includes an effective home hygiene program.

Endodontics is therapy directed toward the pulp tissue (nerve) in the center of a tooth. Root canal procedures are as effective in preserving broken teeth in pets as in humans.

Restorative dentistry uses many different materials to replace lost or damaged parts of teeth. The tooth colored composite resins and non-precious metal crowns are most commonly used. While bridges and dentures are infrequently used, the dental implants do hold promise and will probably be widely used in a few years.

Orthodontic appliances, for the dog and cat, typically don't use the same techniques used for humans. However, repositioning of teeth does play an important part in both dental health and oral appearance.

Oral Surgery procedures are often required to restore the health and function of the mouth when genetic, developmental, traumatic, and neoplastic abnormalities are present. Many of the same procedures used for humans can be applied to our pets.
